So one may know that dashikis are originally from Africa but there's more to the story. The name dashiki is derived from the Hausa word ʼdan ciki, which means shirt. The dashiki has made a huge breakthrough from Africa since the African American culture struggles of the 1960's where it became a symbol of affirmation. It stood for “black is beautiful,” and signaled a return to African roots.
The Dashiki Today
As of today, it is noticeable that history (cultural) and fashion often repeats itself. The Dashiki isn't something new, but the beautiful vibrant garments blooming across online. Lately, those who are placed on the social platform were spotted rocking Dashikis for a year or so now. Celebs such as Jhene Akio, Chris Brown, and Beyonce have been caught rocking dashikis. I've seen many say that dashikis are not trending because they have always been out but THEY ARE trending. Everyone wants one for their own benefits. Since I have became more "aware" of self and my Afrikan culture, I wanted to dress as such occasionally. I personally wear my dashikis' around my house. Mine are loose fitting and comfortable to lounge around.
How much did I pay?
On instagram and online boutiques, I've see the dashikis range anywhere from $20-60 American dollars. I paid $11.99 before shipping and handling. Even with shipping you're paying a cheaper price. With so many different styles, patterns, material, there's a dashiki out there for everyone to rock.
Where can I find one?
